You Make Jesus Smile - United Church of Christ
July 4, 2005, the United Church of Christ's General Synod passed a resolution to support "equal marriage rights for all people, regardless of gender." This is a history maker in the United States. The United Church of Christ is the first major United States denomination to support same-sex marriage.
The resolution also asks "for an end to rhetoric that fuels hostility, misunderstanding, fear and hatred expressed toward gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender persons."
We appreciate the United Church of Christ's brave move of calling for the recognition of same-sex marriages. We applaud their efforts to reduce the level or rhetoric that is hurting gay, bisexual and transgendered people. Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God (Matthew 5:9). For supporting gay human rights and for being peacemakers in the universal church of Jesus Christ, we present the United Church of Christ with the You Make Jesus Smile award.
Additional information about the historic decision can be read on the United Churches of Christ web site.
