Proverbs 2:16-22

Proverbs 2:16-22 To deliver thee from the strange woman, even from the stranger which flattereth with her words; 17Which forsaketh the guide of her youth, and forgetteth the covenant of her God. 18For her house inclineth unto death, and her paths unto the dead. 19None that go unto her return again, neither take they hold of the paths of life. 20That thou mayest walk in the way of good men, and keep the paths of the righteous. 21For the upright shall dwell in the land, and the perfect shall remain in it. 22But the wicked shall be cut off from the earth, and the transgressors shall be rooted out of it (KJV).

Reflection

In this proverb, sex is compared with drinking water. Youth are advised to have sex with long-term sexual partners, not with strangers. The writer of this proverb hopes young people will be captivated by their partner's love, and will find their partners sexually fulfilling.

Gay men have a reputation of putting temporary physical pleasures above long-term relationships. This stereotype is not highly accurate. Many gay men campaign for same-sex marriage rights. There is, however, an element of truth in the stereotype that gay men are more interested in sex than in relationships. God calls gay men to give long-term, stable relationships a higher priority than temporary sexual partners.
