Proverbs 1:24-28 Because I have called, and ye refused; I have stretched out my hand, and no man regarded; 25But ye have set at nought all my counsel, and would none of my reproof: 26I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when your fear cometh; 27When your fear cometh as desolation, and your destruction cometh as a whirlwind; when distress and anguish cometh upon you. 28Then shall they call upon me, but I will not answer; they shall seek me early, but they shall not find me (KJV).
Reflection
This devotion cannot be taken in isolation. The devotion builds on the ideas developed in the devotion for Proverbs 1:20-23. In the devotion for Proverbs 1:20-23, we learned that wisdom is personified, or given human qualities in this chapter. Common sense or wisdom is a way God communicates to people. In the last devotion, we looked more at how God is communicating to homophobic people through common sense, science, and legal judgments to encourage acceptance of gay and bisexual people.
The proverb for today continues to discuss wisdom. Wisdom is said to laugh at those who do not follow its advice. Those who continually reject wisdom eventually become unable to find wisdom. The general direction to which wisdom points is God. The ultimate wisdom is God.
The legal judgments for gay rights and for same-sex couple rights, scientific understandings that sexual orientation is not a choice, and increased general acceptance of queer people in society are ways God is speaking directly to the gay and bisexual community. God is speaking to deeply wounded queer people. God’s voice, seen in wisdom, is telling gay and bisexual people that queers are valuable, that queer people should not have to live as victims, and that all queer people are welcome in the Kingdom of heaven.
