Proverbs 1:20-23 Wisdom crieth without; she uttereth her voice in the streets: 21She crieth in the chief place of concourse, in the openings of the gates: in the city she uttereth her words, saying, 22How long, ye simple ones, will ye love simplicity? and the scorners delight in their scorning, and fools hate knowledge? 23Turn you at my reproof: behold, I will pour out my spirit unto you, I will make known my words unto you (KJV).
Reflection
Adam Clarke, a well-respected, conservative Bible commentator, tells us wisdom is personified in this proverb. He notes that wisdom is often personified or given human traits in the book of Proverbs. About this passage, Adam Clarke says, "Common sense, universal experience, and the law of justice written on the heart, as well as the law of God . . ."
While human understanding is flawed and subject to human weaknesses, one way God speaks to us is through our intellect. When something does not make sense, a warning bell should sound in our minds. Should pastors or church denominations say they are speaking for God and words of hate and rejection are coming from them, warning bells should be sounding!
Does it makes sense that God would create gay and bisexual people only to damn them to hell? Would a loving God form gay and bisexual people in the womb, only to let them burn for eternity in hell? That is not logical. Fortunately, God does not destine gay and bisexual people to hell, because of their sexuality.
Common sense, science, and experience are speaking to the hearts of gay, bisexual, and straight people. This form of wisdom is saying, "Enough is enough. Churches, religion, and Christianity are all about love. Churches need to do what is right and treat gays with respect, love, and dignity."
This same voice of common sense and general wisdom is seen in many public opinion polls supporting gay rights, same-sex couple benefits, and same-sex marriages. The principle of treating gay and bisexual people with equity and fairness is being heard in opinion polls, legislation in western democracies, and court rulings. Perhaps, God is speaking more clearly to some of our legislators, to some of our judges, and to the general population than God is speaking to the hearts of many pastors.
