Proverbs 16:19-20

Proverbs 16: 19-20 Better to live humbly with the poor than to share plunder with the proud. Those who listen to instruction will prosper; those who trust the Lord will be joyful. 20The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive (NLT).1

Reflection

Gay, bisexual, and trans-identified people are an oppressed minority. Queers lack political and social strength. Because the queer community lacks social and political strength, one could say the queer community is poor. Straight people are part of the majority, and share the perks of being the majority group. Within churches, the one place that should welcome gay, lesbian, bisexual, and trans people, queer people are often rejected.

Some gay, bisexual, and trans-identified Christians choose to live in the closet. They often live in the closet at church for fear of physical violence, emotional and spiritual abuse, and rejection. A few queer Christians are in the closet at church, because being in the closet allows them to hold leadership positions. By pretending to be straight, they can be church leaders. To try to hide their identity, a few closeted gay and bisexual Christians, attack God’s gay and bisexual children. When queer Christians make homophobic comments in church, they are sharing spiritual “plunder” with the “proud.” One is better to live as an openly gay, bisexual, or trans person than to spiritually plunder God's queer children.
