Proverbs 15:1-3

Proverbs 15:1-3 A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger. 2The tongue of the wise useth knowledge aright: but the mouth of fools poureth out foolishness. 3The eyes of the LORD are in every place, beholding the evil and the good (KJV).

Reflection

Probably no topic of discussion can become more heated and inflamed than the discussion of sexuality and religion. A few words guaranteed to cause hurt and anger include the following:

· Sexuality slurs – fag, faggot, dyke, lesbo, breeder
· Condemnation – sinner, abomination, hell
· Words associated with rejection – family values
· Insults – pervert, homophobe

We cannot have a healing dialogue between the queer and Christian communities until we are able to use less offensive and painful language. The first step in dialogue is to listen and understand. We cannot get to the listening and understanding stage, if we insist on judging, labeling, and damning people.
