  • Thursday August 4 - Sunday August 7, 2011 Affirm United Conference - Making it Better, Edmonton, Canada, hosted by Southminster-Steinhauer United Church. The Affirm Conference will have keynote speakers and workshops on numerous topics.

    Presenters

    Francine Proulx-Kenzle is Secretary and Francophone Director-at-Large of PFLAG Canada. Her presentation will address issues relating to sexual orientation from a parent's perspective, with a special emphasis on suicide. Francine Proulx-Kenzle is a member of the faculty of the University of Regina in Regina Saskatchewan.

    Dr. André P. Grace is a professor in Educational Policy Studies and Director of the Institute for Sexual Minority Studies and Services in the Faculty of Education at the University of Alberta in Edmonton. He is co-founder of Camp fYrefly, a summer leadership camp for sexual and gender minority youth, and he is national consultant on sexual and gender issues for the Canadian Teachers' Federation. Dr. Grace will address Bullying, Youth and Resilience.

    Dr. Lorne Warneke is a Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Alberta. He founded the gender clinic at the Grey Nuns Hospital in Edmonton and is currently one of the two psychiatrists in Alberta that Alberta Health accepts to recommend sex reassignment surgery for appropriate transgendered individuals. Dr Warneke will address issues relating to transgendered individuals and gender reassignment.
