Stranger at the Gate

Title: Stranger at the Gate: To be Gay and Christian in America
Author: Mel White
Publisher: Plume, New York
Year: 1995
Available: and

A few of the well-known Christians Mel White wrote for includes Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson, and Billy Graham. These men chose Mel White, because of his communication skills.

Mel White is an excellent communicator. You see that clearly when you start reading his autobiography. There is something gripping about Stranger at the Gate. Once you start reading the book, it is difficult to put the book down.

This book is a testimony of God’s leading more than it is a defense of gay Christianity. Stranger at the Gate tells about Mel White’s life, as he struggles with homosexuality, learns to accept himself, reconciles his faith and sexuality, and then starts to live as an authentic, gay Christian, and Christian activist. In the book, we see the humanity of Mel White.

I recommend this book to straight people who wish to understand what it is like to be a gay Christian, as well as to gay people who are struggling to reconcile their sexuality with their faith.
