The Vomit Awards - John Hagee

John Hagee is the Senior Pastor a mega church, Cornerstone Church in San Antonio, Texas. According to the John Hagee Ministries web site, Cornerstone Church has 19,000 "active members." John Hagee is a dynamic pastor, who has spent many years fighting anti-Semitism. We appreciate his efforts to reduce hatred of Jewish people. Pastor Hagee is to be commended for his efforts to fight anti-Semitism.

We are concerned about video clips of comments attributed to John Hagee regarding same-sex marriages. The Right Wing Watch contains a video clip of John Hagee speaking about same-sex marriages. We took notes of the video, and our notes agree with the transcript provided on the Right Wing Watch web site. The words that concern us appear below :

“. . . we need a constitutional amendment to protect the sanctity of marriage, that guarantees that in America the only marriage to be recognized is the marriage between a man and a woman in the house of God. There are so many things in America that have changed. That should never change. And you listen to me. If it does, you can kiss this country goodbye.”

The United States of America is a powerful and a strong country. America survived two world wars, a civil war, numerous conflicts, and terrorist attacks. The United States is not threatened by gay people getting married. America can handle two men getting married, or two women getting married. Gay marriage poses no threat to the security or existence of the United States.

Same-sex marriages do not even threaten the spirituality of Americans. There is religious freedom in the United States. People are free to choose what church to attend and what doctrines they feel are appropriate. Those who do not agree with same-sex marriage have the right to continue to feel same-sex marriages are wrong. The Christian church has faced divisive debates over the centuries and survived those debates. The Church of Jesus Christ will also survive this debate. There is no threat to the spirituality of American Christians by gay marriage.

Americans are very patriotic and nationalistic. They take pride in their country with good reason. The United States of America is one of the best countries in the world. We are concerned the words attributed to Pastor Hagee could make some people think gay people are a threat to the existence of the United States, and might encourage some people to dislike gay and bisexual people.

For implying same-sex marriages are a threat to the United States of America, we award you with the "You Make Jesus Vomit" award.
